Havana in Hi and Low FDELity” is an ongoing project that will have three different outcomes: as a video work, a print series, and a multimedia performance for the stage. The title of the work is an appropriation of the 1950ís album’s title “Havana in Hi-Fi”, by Richard Hayman Orchestra, at the peak of the Mambo frenzy.
Using the “sound quality” as a supposedly main subject, this work is meant to be a multi reflective mirror of Cuban sociological reality nowadays, taking as a prime target the two main Cuban cities: Havana and Miami. The work will incorporate local language, rafter’s testimonies, historical data, excerpts and ideas contained in literary work about life in Cuba, the exodus, and the process of keeping a nationality while reinventing the self in a new context.

People of Cuba: letís talk about GE” was the first video clip made for this project, as well as the first printed set. A three channel video of it was also made, as part of the stage performance that will also incorporate 3-D props and life performance.

To this followed “Cuban Rocket Lands in New York City”, and outdoor performance that dealt with the subject of the American Embargo against Cuba.

A series of “Cigar Rings (or cigar bands)” pieces is now been done, but there are more videos on the calendar, the next one to be made in collaboration with Frank Rodriguez, a video-maker, using high resolution technology.

The design of this costume is based on elements taken from the Cuban National Coat of Arms. Among others, the shield includes the following iconic elements: a typical Cuban landscape with the Royal Palm tree prominently in the foreground; the white and blue stripes of the Cuban flag; coffee leaves; a raising sun that illuminates a seascape in the middle of which lies a key that represents Cuba as the “access key” to the Gulf of Mexico. Like the shield, the figure is crowned with a Phrygian cap.
